I live in Manhattan, NY. I am considering buying a 49cc scooter. Do I need a license and/or insurance ?
I read that in conneticut you do not need these, but here in Manhattan I do not know. If yes, how much is the insurance (about monthly)
From another poster who is with the NYPD

“A gas powered scooter is a motor vehicle as defined by the NY State Vehicle & Traffic Law.
In other words, you need a driver’s license to operate one (a regular license will do). However, here’s the big problem, these vehicles CAN NOT be registered with DMV because they don’t fit the safety criteria required. They also CAN NOT be inspected, for the same reasons. They can however be insured under a personal insurance policy not a motor vehicle one.
For awhile, these scooters were very popular in NYC, and then the cops began cracking down on the operators. There is actually a list of about 15 tickets that can be given to a driver of 1 of these things, and guess what the minimum age a person has to be before they can get a ticket …….that’s right, 16!
My suggestion to you is avoid these vehicles like the plague, they are not only illegal but dangerous.
Some of the violations that you can face are:
1. Unlicensed Operator $75 + $60
2. Unregistered Vehicle $75 + &60
3. Uninspected Vehicle $50 + $60
4. Uninsured Vehicle – minimum fine of $100 + $60 & revocation of license or privilege for 1 year.
5. No Turn Signals $30 + $40
6. No Horn $30 +$40
7. No Tail Lights $30 +$40
8. No Brake Lights $30+ $40
9. Defective Tires $30 +$40
10. Inadequte Brakes $30 + $40 (this has 4 points on your license)
11. No Mirrors $30 + $40
12. No Safety Glass $30 + $40
13. No Headlights $30 +$40
14. No Emergency Flashers $30 +$40
15. Inadequate Steering Mechanism $30 + $40
AND on top of all of the above, the Officer can impound your scooter and send it to the tow pound for “Determine True Owner” if you don’t have the receipt for it.
All in all, it’s not worth it.”

Looking for ways to make your motorcycle stand out in a crowd? The leather market is full of great items that you can buy either for your bike or for your own outfit which will help to add a lot of style and class to your ride. Here are some great ideas for products that will help you look your best on your next motorcycle trip.
Motorcycles generally are not equipped with accessories such as saddle bags, tool bags, luggage racks, sissy bars, custom foot pegs, or custom headlights unless you buy a used bike from a private seller. In that case, the previous owner may have added extra accessories to the motorcycle already. If not, it’s up to you to customize the appearance of your motorcycle which can be somewhat expensive. You may consider starting with the basics which also prove to be the most functional. Items such as saddle bags, windshield bags, and tool bags are great accessories that you can have for your motorcycle because they provide a means of storage for tools, clothing, rain gear, spare parts and equipment, and more. If you’ve ever been on a long motorcycle trip that required extra parts or the use of tools, you know how important it is to be able to haul those items with you. If you didn’t have any extra storage space on your motorcycle, then you wouldn’t be able to bring along the items that may prove to be very helpful in the event of a mechanical breakdown.
Another great accessory is leather fringe which can be added to just about any part of the motorcycle to give your motorcycle an added touch of style and class. Fringe for handlebars and clutch covers with fringe are also great items that can be added to your bike for decoration.
There are a ton of different styles of motorcycle jackets that contain different patterns of fringe, braiding, lacing, stainless steel loops and buckles, or antique hardware to give your jacket a little more flare. If you like a jacket that looks a little more traditional in the biker sense, you may consider the basic motorcycle jacket which gives a more classic biker look. If you consider yourself to be a little more sporty, then you may consider a scooter type motorcycle jacket that doesn’t contain the extra bells and whistles that a traditional motorcycle jacket contains. The scooter jackets are a little more sleek and have a more sporty look that appeals to those types of motorcycle riders. Other motorcycle apparel items to consider when dressing out your look are motorcycle chaps, motorcycle vests, motorcycle gloves, bandannas, motorcycle overalls, and motorcycle boots. These items all can help enhance the overall look of the your leather motorcycle outfit.
It’s hard not to find everything you need when there so many leather options available for dressing out your motorcycle and outfit. The items mentioned above can help enhance your appearance as a motorcyclist and can help keep you looking your best on each and every motorcycle ride you take.
