First Motorbike – How does it work?
So im thinking about getting a motorbike, problem is i have no idea how licensing or anything like that works. I was talking to a guy from work and he told me you take a £90 day course and after that you can have any bike upto 250cc and ride it as long as you have a L plate on it. HE also said the tax for the year is around £15, first year insurance around £200 (on a 125cc bike) and MOT £20. Obviously you would have to buy gear like helmets and jackets (would help if you could tell me how much these are) and whether the above is true, i have a driving license if that effects anything at all, thanks
so do you have to do the course on your own bike, or does the course proivde the bike?
I did mine a year and half ago and this was the rules back then…
You can ride any bike upto 125cc and no more power than 14.6bhp or 11kw on L plates with a valid CBT.
The CBT cost me £100 with instructors bike and would have been £90 if I took my own bike. (which is strange because you can’t ride it there because you haven’t got a CBT and not insured !! ) The CBT is valid for 2 years and at the end either have to sit it again or do a test to continue riding.
The course is usually a full day of training of which you will spend about 2hrs on the road. Personally I think it was easy and only provided basic training considering you will be let loose on the road on your own after passing.
Tax for 12 months is £15
Insurance varies but mine is £26 per month including legal cover etc
MOT cost £28
Don’t expect too much power out of 125’s, yes there are 33+bhp ones etc but you can’t ride them on a CBT. They simply do as commuters.
