I am nearly 18 years old. I am thinking about getting an old scooter, something like a Vespa or a Lambretta with been a mod. Thats if I cannot afford a car by the end of the summer. I have been a mod since about November so wanting a scooter is something quite recent. The trouble is I know little about bikes and scooters at the moment. Firstly what type of licence do I need to have in order to ride something like a Lambretta and what do you have to do in order to obtain one?
Next what kind of scooter is best for a mod like me? Most people would go for the classic Vespa’s and Lambretta’s but there are other ones like the Heinkels to consider so what scooter should I go for?
Finally, any tips in buying and running a scooter would be helpful, as well as best places to look for insurance.
Thanks.
I used to have a scooter and if it’s the same as a few years ago, you’ll need to take a training course (CBT) which will give you a certificate to drive the scooter with L plates for 2 years. You’ll have to pass a motorcycle test to get your L plates taken off. Mine was a 125cc but I think it’s different if it’s only a 50cc. You may be able to drive those on just a car licence, not sure.
When you’re buying a scooter, make sure that it idles well and make sure there isn’t any black smoke coming out of the exhaust when you start it and when you accelerate. If you live in the UK, you’re going to need some proper layers because it can get unbelievably cold unless it’s summer.
Can I get online european insurance while I live in us, texas because I cant find US moped insurance. Thanks?
about to turn 15 and about to buy myself my very own moped off of cragslist which is very cheap.
Sure you can! There’s even a slight possibility that it might not be a complete scam/fake policy! But it’s only going to be good in the country of origin – it won’t “work” in Texas.
